Removing The Smell of Pet Odor from Your Home

As much as you love your pets, your furry friends can cause quite a ruckus. So here’s a guide to removing the smell of pet odor from your home.

As much as you love your pets, your furry friends can cause quite a ruckus in your home. From breaking objects to leaving messy stains behind, there’s never a dull moment when you have a cat or a dog sharing your home with you. Even other pets, such as ferrets, birds, fish, or hamsters get in on the fun. But they’re not as common as cats or dogs. So here’s a guide to removing the smell of pet odor from your home.

Solutions to Avoid

First of all, there are some things you should know before you get started. There are some cleaning solutions that you should avoid when it comes to getting rid of the pet odor in your home. For example, don’t use bleach. Although bleach can help disinfect the floors and carpets that are stained, it won’t get rid of the smell, only the actual stains left behind. Not only is it harmful to you and your family to breathe, but it can also harm your pets as well.

Also, avoid using ammonia. There is already ammonia present in the urine excreted by cats and dogs. Adding ammonia to that stain will only make it that much worse. Combining bleach and ammonia is an even worse idea, as it produces deadly toxic fumes.

Lastly, using homemade mixtures is also inadvisable. Vinegar, peroxide, detergent, and baking soda can be useful, but you’ll never be able to eliminate the smell of pet odor no matter how much of these solutions that you use.

Getting Rid of Odors

Now that you know what won’t work or what you shouldn’t do, what can you do? Destroying the home or selling the house are extreme last-resort measures that you shouldn’t have to attempt. Remodeling and renovating affected areas by replacing the floors and subflooring can be a great way to get rid of the smell, but this method requires a great deal of time, money, effort, and patience.

Using Machines

Enzyme products can get rid of the smell of pet odor no matter where it is in your home. This is a fantastic way to make a difference. But using machines could be another approach that you haven’t thought of before. Spraying enzymes or ozone through professional machinery can get rid of the smell, but it could also only be a temporary fix and might need several applications to work successfully.
