3 Types of Carpet Stains and Advice on How to Clean Them

Keeping your carpet clean is one of the best ways to maintain the environment inside your home. Sitting down on the carpet can be a nice change of pace from always having to sit on the furniture, especially if your back hurts. Plus, you may want to get down on the floor to play with your pets. However, carpets tend to stain easily no matter what you do to keep them clean. Here’s a look at some of those stains and what you can do to lift them.

3 Types of Carpet Stains and Advice on How to Clean Them

Pets

Although our pets are adorable and comforting additions to our families, they can also be quite messy. Use newspaper or paper towels to soak up the liquid left behind by pet stains. Cold water can also help you make these stains disappear, even if you think that warm water would help instead. Use commercially-available cleaning solutions or odor neutralizing powders that you can vacuum in to help make your carpet smell nice again. Using heat will only make the stain harden faster.

Red Wine

Drinking some red wine can be good for your health, you need to be careful about how you consume it. This doesn’t just apply to how much you drink, but how much you spill in the process. Whenever a spill has just happened, blot it as quickly as you can. Then grab a clean cloth and use it to help get rid of the stain. This method is much more effective if you use some water, and even more effective if you mix up a simple cleaning solution consisting of white vinegar, dishwashing detergent, and some warm water. When you’re done spreading the solution, take a wet sponge and rub the affected spot, so that the sharp smell of vinegar doesn’t linger in the room. If all else fails, then create another mixture. This time the blend will be of some hand dishwashing liquid, hydrogen peroxide, and elbow grease. Before you do anything, try a spot test to make sure that there isn’t a bleaching effect that you didn’t notice. Then use a wet cloth to clean up the spots after you’re done.

Existing Stains

Unfortunately, old stains are much harder to get rid of than a fresh stain. Hydrogen peroxide, wet vacs, and commercial cleaning products might be your only option. However, if you can’t remove the stains, then it is time to call a cleaning service to come and help you. Even so, the professionals might recommend that you replace your carpets. If they do, then you should heed their advice.
