The Main Causes of Sewer Damage Within Your Home

sewer damage

All of the plumbing drains, fixtures, and pipes in your home are connected to the largest (and most important) piece of plumbing inside your whole home, your main sewer line. Between improper uses of these drains, fixtures, and pipes, as well as other outside factors, you may be left with serious sewer damage. Eventually, your main sewer line can become clogged to the point of needing serious repairs or replacement. Here are some of the main causes of sewer damage within your home so you know what to look out for. If you have had any sewer damage or flooding in your home, call Hydro Clean Certified Restoration to help restore your home and any damaged belongings!

Serious Pipe Damage

If sewer pipes are ruptured or broken, the sewage will not be able to properly drain throughout the system – leading to immediate and frequent backups. Some common causes of sewer damage in your pipes include:

  • Sewer pipe rupture because of shifting soil, settling, increased traffic on the ground above, or any use of heavy construction equipment on the ground.
  • Corrosion of older pipes, causing the pipe to collapse or break.
  • Leaking joints where the seals between sections of the pipe had broken, allowing sewage and water to escape out.

Sagging Sewer Lines

While this is out of your control, sagging sewer lines happen over time, which can lead to serious sewer damage. This “bellied” pipe occurs when a section of the pipe has sunk down due to ground or soil conditions. The low spot in the line will start to collect waste and paper, resulting in blockages.

Tree Root Intrusion

Older sewer lines were sometimes made of clay or other absorbent materials. Also, the connections between the pipe sections were not as tight as today’s PVC pipes. As shrubs and tree roots grow, they search for sources of water. They latch onto your home’s sewer pipes, growing into the pipe in order to reach the water inside. As these roots expand over time, they can cause the line to break. This is a rare occurrence for some homes, but it is still noteworthy, as it can lead to serious flooding and sewer damage within your home.

If any of these issues occur to your home’s sewer system and there is already extensive damage, call Hydro Clean to clean up the mess, remove and water, and restore your home back to an ideal condition in a quick and efficient manner.
