Drapery Cleaning 101: How to Maintain and Clean Your Home’s Draperies and Blinds This Winter

December 13, 2019

Winter is almost here, and now is the perfect time to consider checking up on your home’s draperies and blinds. It’s easy to forget to check on your blinds and draperies, but they can get filthy over time without you even realizing it. Anything from dust, dirt, and debris can get caught up in the fabrics of your home’s blinds and drapery. Drapery cleaning is so important this time of year. Keep these cleaning and maintenance tips in mind next time you take a peek at your drapery and blinds. If you need further assistance, call the experts from Hydro Clean Certified Restoration to give you a hand!

Maintaining and Cleaning your Drapery

It’s easy to forget to check on your blinds and draperies, but they can get filthy over time.

Curtain and drapery cleaning can be a bit tricky. If you have washable curtains or drapery, then check the fabric content. Make sure they are laundered on the right setting. A few fabric window treatments, such as cotton panels, can be machine washed. However, many cannot. For example, rayon curtains should not as they are likely to shrink. (A plus side is that rayon does not easily fade—perfect for a sunny window.) In that case, call Hydro Clean to inspect and vacuum any loose dust or dirt from your shades and drapery. We will use a dry-cleaning solvent, which is specially designed for drapery cleaning!

Deep Cleaning Your Blinds

If dirt, dust, and grime have begun to build on your blinds this winter, it might be time to give them a thorough cleaning. Follow these helpful steps for cleaning any metal and plastic blinds inside your home.

  • First, you’ll need to trap and lock any dust and dirt on your blinds with Swiffer Dusters.
  • Close and remove your blinds. To remove your blinds, pull up the tabs on each end and slide out the blinds. Lay them flat in an open area.
  • Lay a bath towel underneath your blinds, spray them down with a cleaner and allow it to sit for a couple of minutes.
  • Dampen the sponge, wipe off the slats in a horizontal motion until all of the dirt and dust is wiped clean, then rinse off with water.
  • Reverse the sides and repeat
  • Allow your blinds to dry for an hour before re-hanging

If you fail to clean off your blinds thoroughly, give Hydro Clean a call to come out and finish the job for you!
