Upholstery Cleaning: Getting the Stains Out of Your Furniture

June 6, 2019

Let’s say that you just had a party for Memorial Day or a graduation party. If you have set up your backyard patio to be as comfortable as possible, then you probably have a couch to sit on. But stains come and go. Now think about how often you sit on the couch to watch TV, and you spill your snacks and drinks all over the couch without thinking much of it. After all, you’re just going to replace that couch. Here’s a look at how to get tough stains out of your furniture.

Figuring Out Cleaning Codes

Stains out of your upholstery
Here’s a look at how to get tough stains out of your upholstery.

Before you can get started, you should take a few minutes to determine what the cleaning codes are supposed to mean. You will see codes such as W, S, S/W, and X. Look for the tags attached to the cushions, which will have these codes on them. When you see a W, you are supposed to use water-based upholstery cleaner for materials such as polyester and nylon. When you see an S, that means you should use a solvent. This solvent works on cotton, rayon, wool, silk, and denim, among others. When you see S/W, it means you can use either water or solvents. Use water for water-based stains and solution for oil-based stains. You will only rarely find the X code, but when you do, it’s a sign that you need to call the professionals.

What to Do Next

Now that you have sorted out what the cleaning codes mean, you can choose your way forward. Use a brush on your furniture; the brush has to feature stiff bristles, but you can also choose to use a white cloth if you wanted to instead. Don’t use colors, since the dye could transfer from the fabric to the upholstery. Sprinkle some baking soda to deal with pet odors. Vacuum out the nooks and crannies both around and inside the furniture – move any spare change you find to your coin jar.

Cleaning Fabric Stains

Some couches are made of different fabrics. Use Perky spotter on a fabric labeled wet clean or with a cleaning code “W” and a solvent based spotter for fabric needing to be dry cleaned or cleaning code “S”. Be very careful, furniture is a very delicate material and can be easily damaged. Some fabrics are labeled “professional cleaning only”
